i also got attacked in scarlet square and am now cursed. it was my understanding that these places were safe.

As far as I've checked you still can't be Bonecrushed while being in your factions safe zone - Square of Storms for Hypno and Scarlet Square for Organik. I have suspicions that what happened is you were in another zone, were attacked being at pc or not and when you came back you woke-up at Scarlet Square/Square of Storms. So as far I'm concerned safe zones are working perfectly fine.

Pretty sure they're both still working. I'm gonna guess you weren't at the computer and then got sent there after you died as Ihit suggested. Or you went to the wrong safe zone.
